Abstract

The article analyzes the concept of "sustainable development" through the decomposition of its components – "sustainability" and "development", with an emphasis on the development of territories. Development is considered from an economic, social and environmental point of view, while it is noted that in an industrial society, priority is given to increasing production and obtaining economic benefits. Various approaches to environmental sustainability have been studied, which made it possible to conclude that it is advisable to move from the resource paradigm to the integration of economic, social and environmental components that form sustainable development. The concept of an "industrial region" is considered, characterized by complexity and multidimensional nature, because on the one hand, industrial potential contributes to economic growth and development of the region, and on the other hand, environmental tension. When determining the goal of sustainable development of the region, its specifics should be taken into account. The analysis made it possible to formulate the author's definition of the concepts of "sustainable development of an industrial region" and "sustainable development of an industrial region based on the formation of an ecosystem".
